If at all possible, please send your query by email. Note that I won't open unsolicited attachments, so if you want me to read your query, please keep it in the body of the email.

What to expect after your initial query: We generally evaluate all queries within 2-3 weeks and will respond by email. If I want to see a partial or full manuscript, I will ask you to submit it by email attachment - either Microsoft Word or pdf if possible. You always have the option of mailing requested material, but I am able to respond faster to electronic submissions, usually within 6-8 weeks.
FICTION GUIDELINES:
When making a fiction submission please send:
A query letter including a brief description of your story and your relevant background, including any writing credentials (publications, awards, employment) you may have
The first five pages of the manuscript (pasted into the body of the email)

NON-FICTION GUIDELINES:
When making a non-fiction submission, please send:
A query letter describing your project
A detailed bio or resume including any platform you have that will help sell the book
If you have written the manuscript, please include the first five pages only.
Be aware that, in most instances, to sell your non-fiction project you will eventually need to write a formal proposal -- even if you have already written the manuscript. For guidance on how to put together a non-fiction proposal, see my Non-Fiction Wish List.
If you want to mail your query:
Do keep in mind that an email query will shorten your response time. However, if you prefer to send your query by snail mail, please always send a self addressed stamped envelope (SASE). If you want your manuscript returned to you please include the correct sized envelope with the proper postage attached. Otherwise, please include a standard envelope with a first class stamp for our reply. We are unable to reply to anyone who does not include an SASE.
